Sample Sales!

I saw the most amazing thing of my life on Friday....sample sales!!! Sample sales are when showrooms sell their leftovers for suuuuuper cheap, whether it's merchandise buyers didn't want, merchandise worn by models that is now unsellable, or merchandise with major/minor defects. The first building we went to was 12 floors of show rooms!!! I was in heaven! People literally strip down in the middle of the sales floor to try stuff on. It's crazy, but so much fun! My only purchase was a pair of Miss Me jeans for $30. Pretty darn good if I say so myself! The other building didn't have near as much stuff, but we still checked it out. These sales happen the last Friday of every month. I know where I'll be on those Fridays!

Oh my goodness I see why everybody in this city wears flats! Heels are made for girls who walk to the garage, get in the car, and walk no farther than like half a block to get to the destination. I learned that the semi-hard way. I was smart enough to wear flats to the metro stop, but changed on the metro and still had to walk 3 or 4 blocks. My feet were kinda sore! :-/

Nothing exciting in the form of fights or earthquakes happened this weekend. I'm still loving everything and having fun! XOXO

More "Adventures" of Rachel

I’ve had quite the exciting “adventures” the past few days! I had yet another bus experience. There was pretty much a gang fight between two black chick gangs. I’m not sure how it all started or what happened because I was towards the back of the bus reading and this was all happening up front. It got so bad that the bus driver refused to leave the stop. It was terrible!! We all had to get off the bus and wait for the next bus to come. But, don’t you worry—I am now equipped with pepper spray compliments of Uncle Bill and Dana! (I also made a new friend this weekend....maybe stalker, not friend. He was on the same train and bus as me on Saturday, but got off a stop before me. He was at my stop on Sunday to get on (same time as me and not the same stop he got off of) and also miraculously took the same train as me back into the city. Once again, don't you worry--I have pepper spray!)

My second “adventure” happened Monday night. My apartment building got evacuated!! Sirens inside our apartment started going off and they started yelling at us over an intercom to evacuate and not use the elevator. Stairs suck! Weird thing is, they let us right back in. I’m not quite sure what happened, but I wasn’t too impressed. I was actually focusing and on a roll doing homework! (Rarely happens.)

My latest “adventure” happened in the middle of the night last night. We had an earthquake! It was just a little guy, but enough to wake me up—which is rare! It was pretty cool to “experience my first earthquake.” [[More info: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20120725/us-socal-earthquake/]]

I cooked supper tonight! I hate cooking, but have a new goal of cooking once a week. I made a chicken enchilada recipe I found on Pinterest. It was actually really good and I didn’t mess it up—huge surprise! My roommate, Darshna, and I discovered a new shopping area today. Dangerous!

Things I miss from Iowa
  • Needless to say, Old Blue—my car! (Dad, I really really really really really want it out here!!!!)
  • The peace and quiet at bedtime, although it was wonderful at Uncle Bill’s the night I spent there

Uncle Bill, Dana, and I went wine tasting when I visited them this weekend!

My Adventure With Public Transportaion

I had work orientation on Thursday afternoon meaning I had to suck it up and finally take the bus alone. A scary thought!! So after lots and lots of online research, I figured out my route and my stops, etc. I planned plenty of time Thursday morning and set out. According to my information, I was going to be dropped off right near FIDM coming back from The Grove. Sooo genius me assumed that there was a pick-up stop right near there that would work. Ummm terrible assumption!! I ended up having to walk like six or seven blocks away and missed my bus by like 2 minutes. I was so frustrated!!! So I stand there and wait and wait and wait...and wait! And btw busses have a schedule of their own..they don't necessarily really follow the online schedule. Fun game, right? As I'm about to just suck it up and get a taxi because I absolutely had to make it there on time, a bus came. Once I got on the bus, life was OK (other than the sketchy people). I didn't have to transfer and it dumped me off pretty close to where I needed to go. According to my research online, that same bus would take a direct route and get me back home. I typed it into my iphone just to double check before I left. Wrong!! It now had me taking a bus to the rail station and taking a train home, which is just fine with me! I prefer the train! I'm just confused as to why my previous information had me taking a bus all the way home. Oh, well. So anyway, that all goes smoothly, except I'm sitting on the train minding my own business, reading my kindle and all the sudden I look up and we're at the station I want to get off at...as the doors are closing. So I get off at the next station, wait for the next train going the other way and get on that. Ugh!!! (It's 10-15 between trains.) So I finally made it home! Hopefully I get better at this whole public transportation thing. I get another shot at it going to Uncle Bill's tomorrow. Thank goodness for my iphone is all I have to say!!!! It saved my life throughout that whole ordeal!

Work orientation was long and kinda boring. A lot of movie watching and paperwork. Blah! I go back on Tuesday morning for more training...meaning more busses and waking up super early. Gotta love public transportation! Buuut I don't think I'd do too well trying to navigate and drive in this traffic.

My roomies and I went to Dark Knight Rises tonight. So. Good!!! I need to find me a Bruce Wayne!

I survived my first week of class!

I survived my first week of classes! My weekend has started J I can get very used to only having class on Monday and Tuesday! All the classrooms here are painted bright colors and some even have bright-colored carpet. So much better than the drab Wartburg walls.

Yesterday I had class from 8:30-3. Not terrible at all. My first class is called Retail Environment. It’s essentially a class dealing with various retail channels, both domestically and globally. Throughout the 10 weeks we will be doing in-depth research about a specific channel. My second class yesterday was Brand Management Strategies. It’s very consumer behavior based—stuff I absolutely love!! The main project for that class is a group project where we create our own brand and compare it to major competitors in that field analyzing how we’re going to be successful. It sounds super fun!

Today I had my other two classes. My first one was Merchandise Math. It took the teacher literally an hour to finally get started, and when we did it was literally all rounding. Like 3rd grade math rounding…whole numbers, percents, and dollars. But I have a feeling it’s going to get really hard really fast. The teacher said “math is like learning to ride a bike.” Uhmmm I don’t think Eric and I agree on this one!! ;-) My other class today was Concepts in Trend Forecasting. It’s much more interesting than it sounds! Our major project is to compile information and decipher if it’s a trend or a norm and to kind of analyze it. It sounds fun, but very time-consuming.

I am a working woman!! I will be working at the Gap at the Grove—a suuuper nice outdoor mall. This Gap is one of the four largest in the world and has a special experimental program called Project LA. I don’t know many details, but I know it’s a way more laid-back store because of it. The store is also HUGE! It has literally every Gap department ever created…but under one roof. There are around 200 employees there. I’m excited!! I go for orientation on Thursday.

I got called out on being from the Midwest because of my accent so many times this week, it’s not funny!! Crazy thing is, I don’t hear an accent from people here. I also got told I wasn’t from here because I’m “too nice” and “smile a lot.” Not quite sure how to take that one!

A few things I learned this week/weekend:
  • ·      It’s possible to become a “local” at a LA bar. The girls I was with Saturday night are frequent customers, and we got the owner’s number and vice versa plus a free round. We didn’t’ complain!
  • ·      They make us have a special card to do laundry. Like I need one more thing to keep track of!! I’d much rather walk down the hall with my quarters!
  • ·      Yay for having a Keurig again! I was literally dying without a coffee maker! They have “complimentary coffee until 11” in the lobby of our building, but half the time it’s not even out and when it is, it’s gone. Not good!!
  • ·      Grocery shopping is a total different experience when you actually have to walk home with the bags. No more waiting to go once a month and loading my car up!!

Staples Center and LA Live are literally two blocks kiddy-corner from my apartment building

My school is the long white building in the background--right across the street!

Welcome to LA!

Hey everyone! I figured a blog was the easiest way to keep in touch with everybody!

I am getting all settled in my new apartment. The move went very smoothly! Aside from my poor Keurig and crock pot getting damaged in the process of shipping :-(, everything and everyone made it safely. I spent the first few days getting settled and visiting my uncle Bill and Dana. It was great to see them and great that they're so close!

I love how absolutely everything I need is within walking distance!! The school is right across the street, the grocery store is a block away, Starbucks and Coffee Bean are both less than half a block away (dangerous), the metro rail station is just a few blocks away, the metro bus stop is on the corner, and there are so many restaurants within walking distance.

One of my roommates, Darshna, is Indian, so we ordered Indian food tonight. I actually enjoyed what I ordered! It's also great that they delivered...for free.

I'm enjoying my last few days before classes start for me on Monday.

This is me and my roommate Darshna on our apartment balcony.
